Ben Simmons battles the Philadelphia 76ers didn’t do what’s needed to help him as he adapted to his mental health issues.
Addressing previous colleague JJ Redick on “The Old Man & the Three” podcast, released Thursday, he said he was in a “tough place” in Philadelphia.
“I didn’t feel like I got it [help] from mentors, colleagues — I won’t say all partners, since there’s extraordinary folks in that group that connected and are as yet my companions — yet I didn’t feel like I got that, and it was only an extreme spot for me,” he said.
Simmons, a three-time Elite player, passed on the beginning of the 2021-22 season as he looked for an exchange from the 76ers. In an impasse, the 76ers exchanged him to the Brooklyn Nets in February, getting James Solidify and Paul Millsap consequently, however Simmons never played last season. He went through a medical procedure in April for a back injury.
Simmons said he attempted to get back to the 76ers last season yet mentor Doc Streams removed him from training and later suspended him.
“I really addressed Doc before training. I was like, ‘Doc, I’m not prepared. Intellectually, I’m not prepared. Kindly grasp that,'” Simmons told Redick. “I attempted to tell him earlier, and he was like, ‘All things considered, I will place you in any case.’ I’m like, ‘Good.’ He advised me to get in. I checked him out. It resembled one moment into training, similar to, ‘Ben, get in.’
“I’m like, above all else, that’s what nobody’s doing. You’re doing this deliberately. What’s more, that is the means by which I felt, as well. It appears as though everybody’s attempting to f — with me now. I’m getting fined for not lifting loads, yet actually I’m quite possibly of the most grounded fellow in the f — ing group. Presently, he said, he’s glad to be in Brooklyn, where he’ll play close by stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.
“Being sick is going. I can hardly pause,” Simmons said. “I’m so energized. Got another number, new shirt. I’m simply anticipating it. I think we have an exceptional group. I suppose assuming that we get it all together, we will be the heroes. That is the end goal.”
