Spider-Man: Brand New Day delivered an outstanding $927 million in global ticket sales during its opening weekend, securing the second-largest opening weekend in box office history both domestically and worldwide.
The film marks Tom Holland’s fourth appearance as the iconic web-slinging superhero. It follows Peter Parker as he battles crime in a world where everyone has forgotten that he is Spider-Man. Zendaya, who is married to Holland, reprises her role as MJ, Parker’s greatest love, while the story focuses on his struggles with loneliness and his search for meaningful human connection.
During its opening weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $355 million across the United States and Canada, making it the second-biggest domestic debut of all time behind 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which opened with $357 million, without adjusting for inflation.
In international markets, Spider-Man: Brand New Day generated $572 million, with China leading overseas territories after contributing $121 million in ticket sales. That performance pushed the film’s worldwide opening to $927 million. In Australia, it also recorded the country’s biggest opening weekend of 2026, collecting $30.4 million.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige described the film’s launch as “a truly phenomenal opening”.
With the latest release, Marvel Studios now holds the four biggest global opening weekends of all time, excluding inflation adjustments: Avengers: Endgame ($1.22 billion), Spider-Man: Brand New Day ($927 million), Avengers: Infinity War ($640 million), and Spider-Man: No Way Home ($600 million).
Tom Rothman, chairman and chief executive officer of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, called Spider-Man: Brand New Day “fundamentally a movie about friendship, about the balm of connection in all our lives, and that is resonant to audiences of all ages and all around the world.”
Spider-Man remains one of Marvel’s most beloved comic book heroes, maintaining strong appeal at the box office despite growing signs of audience fatigue toward superhero films. The newest installment has received a positive response, earning a 90% critics’ rating and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Greg Durkin, founder and CEO of entertainment research firm Enact Insight, told Reuters that the movie’s focus on loneliness, isolation, and overcoming personal challenges particularly connected with Generation Z audiences.
“There’s a mental health crisis now with young people in our country — it’s especially acute for young men right now. There’s a friendship crisis,” Durkin said. “The pandemic created a bunch of shock wave effects that we haven’t fully documented, much less addressed. This movie touches on some really important themes.“
The impressive performance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day has further strengthened an already successful summer box office, which has also benefited from major releases including Toy Story 5 and The Odyssey.
Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak, said on Sunday that the combined performance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey resulted in the “all-time biggest domestic weekend” for movie theaters.
Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal all appear in both films.
“There’s no better lead-in to this movie than The Odyssey,” Dergarabedian said. “Think of how many people around the world were in movie theaters being exposed to trailers marketing for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”
Despite the strong momentum, the overall U.S. box office in 2026 continues to trail pre-pandemic levels. Domestic ticket sales so far this year are 10% higher than the same period last year but remain 16% below 2019 levels, the final full year before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Rentrak.
