Google’s AI Studio is now making Android app development accessible to everyone. During Google I/O 2026 on Tuesday, the company introduced new native Android app creation features in its web-based Google AI Studio, reducing a process that normally requires weeks of setup and coding to just a few minutes.
Google also revealed that consumers will soon be able to use Gemini AI to discover apps they need across both the Play Store and the web, creating additional opportunities for developers to improve app visibility.
According to Google, the new tools are suitable for everyone from experienced developers wanting to quickly prototype ideas to first-time creators.
By enabling users to effectively vibe-code Android apps through browser-based tools, Google is intensifying competition with other AI-powered development platforms such as Cursor, Replit, Lovable, Claude Code, and others, while also broadening Android development access to non-technical creators. The announcement further expands Google’s earlier integration of Gemini-powered coding assistance in the desktop edition of Android Studio.
The applications are developed using the Kotlin programming language alongside Google’s Jetpack Compose toolkit, with support for hardware integrations including GPS, Bluetooth, and NFC, Google said. At present, the generated apps are intended only for personal use, though support for sharing with friends and family is planned for the future.
Google noted that the technology could be useful for building personal utility apps, simple social applications, hardware-connected experiences, and AI-powered projects.
Currently, creators can use the built-in Android Emulator directly in their browser to preview and interact with apps during development. Users can also install the apps on Android devices through a USB connection using the integrated Android Debug Bridge (adb).
For developers wanting to expand their projects further, AI Studio can automatically generate the app record, package the bundle, and upload it to an internal testing track within Google Play Console. This allows creators to continue refining the app while updating versions on their devices throughout the process.
Users aiming for wider app distribution can transfer the project to Android Studio by downloading a ZIP file and exporting it directly to GitHub. Google also plans to introduce support for publishing apps to family and friends, alongside Firebase integrations such as Firestore, Firebase Auth, Firebase App Check, and additional tools.
Through these additions, Google is envisioning an Android ecosystem where users discover apps through their personal connections rather than relying solely on the Play Store.
At the same time, Google is also adding AI-powered discovery tools to the Play Store experience.
A new “Ask Play” overlay powered by AI will let users discover apps through natural conversations directly inside the Play Store.
More significantly, apps will begin appearing within conversations users have with Google’s Gemini assistant, giving developers access to millions of potential users. This feature will roll out in the coming weeks across Gemini on Android and the web. Later this year, Gemini will additionally surface more than 450,000 movies and TV shows, along with livestream sports information, enabling direct links from search queries to relevant Android apps containing that content.
Although Google previewed several Android-related announcements last week, it waited until Tuesday’s opening of Google I/O to unveil the native Android app development features. This indicates the company views the announcement as a major advancement closely connected to its broader vision of applying AI in practical, real-world scenarios — a central theme throughout this year’s conference, where AI was integrated across Google services including Workspace apps, search, mobile tools, and productivity platforms.
