After facing harsh criticism for ignoring Kohli’s century and just applauding Gill, Ganguly responded with a sharp tweet a few days later.
Sourav Ganguly, the former president of the BCCI, rarely responds to online trolls, but he broke the trend spectacularly by criticising those who tried to “twist” his tweet on Shubman Gill. After the Gujarat Titans opener slammed his second century of the IPL 2023 to help the reigning champions chase down 198 in 19.1 overs and eliminate the Royal Challengers Bangalore from the competition, Ganguly showered Gill with plaudits.
Thanks to Gill’s outstanding batting, GT, the top-ranked club, ruined RCB’s celebration and assisted MI in making it through the playoffs. Virat Kohli’s 101 not out off 61 balls was overshadowed by the right-hander’s undefeated 104 off 52 balls. In this edition, Gill had recorded his second century. He had earlier destroyed Sunrisers Hyderabad for his first ever IPL century.
In the IPL 2023 match between RCB and Delhi Capitals, the hostility between the two was clear. During the post-match handshakes ritual, Ganguly, DC’s mentor, walked through Kohli, upsetting the crowd. During the second leg, though, the pair welcomed each other and shook hands.
