Through a public beta in the Google Home app, Google now allows you to control Nest Cam IQ indoor and outdoor cameras, both of which were released in 2017. This means that, in theory, you can now control all Nest cams from as early as 2015 from the Home app rather than the Nest app.
Over the past year and a half, Google has been gradually enabling Nest cams in homes. Google claims that after you move your Nest Cam IQ cameras to Home, you will be able to “access camera settings, review video history in event and timeline views, and more without switching between the Nest and Google Home apps.” From Home, you can also create automations and see live camera feeds in your favorites tab.
You can sign up for the public preview at home.google.com or within the Home app. “If you’re already enrolled in Public Preview, you’ll see prompts in both the Nest app and in the Google Home app under the Favorites Tab with instructions when you’re able to transfer your Nest Cam from the Nest app to the Google Home app,” Google says. This week, access will begin to be made available. Additionally, Google claims that you will be able to reverse transfer your Nest Cam IQ outdoor and indoor cameras back to the Nest app.
If you’re in the public preview, Google also now allows you to control any Nest Hub Max devices via the Home app. But unlike the Nest Cam IQ cameras, you can’t move Nest Hub Max devices back to the Nest app once you’ve brought them into the Home app.
The Nest Cam Indoor (wired, first-generation), Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, first-generation), and Nest Hello / Nest Doorbell (wired, first-generation) can already be transferred to the Home app by Google. According to the company, it will “continue to support the Nest app” and that “there is no change to the Nest app experience today.”
The Nest x Yale door lock and the Nest Protect smoke detector are currently the only things that work in the Nest app but not in the Home app.
