Without launching the Gemini app, Google is providing Workspace users with a method to access “Gems,” which are adaptable versions of its Gemini AI assistant that are experts in particular tasks. Users may now access unique chatbots they’ve created or a variety of pre-made services without navigating between apps thanks to Gems’ immediate availability in the side panel of Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drive, and Gmail.
According to Google’s statement, “Gems can help you further leverage the power of Gemini in a way that’s customized to your needs more efficiently by minimizing repetitive prompting.”
Gemini users can customize chatbots to become “experts” in specific tasks they frequently need, including creating brand-specific text or studying for tests.
Additionally, users can add their own files to Gems to give them resources and context tailored to a particular task. Other than that, Google offers pre-made Gems for tasks like writing code, editing text, coming up with ideas for sales pitches, and more.
Google states that the following are some examples of how Workspace users can make use of Gems:
- Use a copywriting gem to generate posts and content that are pre-loaded with your target audience in mind.
- Develop a gem that supports sales conversations based on data for a particular business, potential customer, or sector.
- Use a “assistant gem” that is specific to your job role to help you get more pertinent summaries and content for internal communications.
- To help you generate the most appealing message, use a Gem that is intended to help you pressure test content from a specific persona (such as the CEO or C-Suite).
Previously, the Gemini app was the only place to find gems. Although users cannot create custom gems directly within Workspace apps, they can do so by pressing the “Create a new Gem” option in the Workspace side panel or by going to gemini.google.com/gems/create. Both custom and pre-made Gems enable workspace features like accessing files and folders and @-mentioning.
All users of Google Workspace who have access to Gemini in the Workspace app side panels can download the Gems update. Google says that although it began rolling out on July 2nd, it might take “longer than 15 days” to show up.
