The sport of basketball has gained immense popularity in Canada in the last few years. With the Toronto Raptors coming off an NBA Championship last season it only helped spike the interest of basketball across Canada. Jamil Abiad, a professional global basketball instructor and trainer has dedicated his time to help many athletes in the sport hopefully reach their dreams & goals. He continues to provide premium basketball training to athletes all over the country and even in different parts of the world. Known for his training, Jamil has become a reputed name all over Ottawa and Eastern Canada. While growing up in Ottawa, he loved and participated in all the sports and was a standout soccer player. It was at the age of 12, he found his passion for basketball. Since then, he has grabbed all the opportunities and has started to create a platform to help athletes excel and also gain visibility to coaches across North America.
While growing up, he dedicated all his time to training for the game with hopes to one day play in the NBA. With his hard work and dedication, regardless of all the obstacles at hand, he was able to make it to the University level ( USPORTS ). During his time there at Bishop’s University, he became an RSEQ Silver Medalist, RSEQ Champion, and would add a few accolades to his list as well. During the 5 years of tenure at the Bishops University, he learned a lot of skills including leadership, time management, self-discipline, and dealing with adversity. However, after his university career, Jamil took his talents overseas and played professionally until he decided to put up the sneakers to fulfill the dreams of others. Abiad has traveled to many different parts of the world to train and educate people about the sport. Moreover, he has had the opportunity to learn & work with NBA players, top trainers, and train athletes who have gone off to play NCAA, USPORTS, CCAA & PROFESSIONALLY.
While speaking about his type of training, he says, “Through my experience as a basketball player and trainer, I have developed my own coaching methods that are aimed at syncing the body and mind in preparation to be the very best. I believe rigorous training is not only necessary at professional basketball levels, but it is also conducive to developing and honing in on one’s skills.” He currently serves as the Team Believe U17 and U19 head coach, the Sahel Basketball technical director, and trainer and the Louis RIEL Jr. Boys Head Coach. His goal is to enhance his experience to provide the best training and coaching to his clients and teams.
The sport has got global recognition and continues to grow at a rapid rate here in Canada. He believes that many young athletes will be getting an opportunity to make a career in the sport. Besides being a trainer & coach, Jamil is also the owner of Jamil Abiad – NL Fitness, a private training company where he provides private training to help athletes enhance and develop their skills. Furthermore, the basketball coach has a very strong presence on Instagram where he gives an insight into his life as a basketball coach. He recently also started an Instagram Series to help give back to athletes by listening to the stories of high-level athletes that have gone on to play at the highest levels.
