It is larger than all the other planets put together by more than thrice.It has more than 90 moons, 12 of which were just this year given formal recognition.
The first moons outside of the Earth were the four largest, Ganymede, Europa, Callisto, and Io, which were found in 1610 by the astronomer Galileo.Although Jupiter lacks a landmass, it is considered to be covered in a sea of metallic hydrogen that is liquid, with a thick, molten core residing beneath it. Its magnetic field is ten times stronger than Earth’s, yet it is “lumpy”—stronger in certain places and weaker in others. Because of this, navigating a spacecraft even a few million kilometers from the Earth’s surface can be challenging. Jupiter has the shortest day in the solar system, spinning on its axis in just 10 earth hours. 4,383 days, or 12 earth years, are needed to complete one orbit of the Sun. BREAKS FROM JUPITER
Anil Bhardwaj, head of the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad, a division of the Government of India’s Department of Space, says, “There is still so much we don’t know about what lurks beneath Jupiter’s heavy gases. “We don’t understand why the components that dominate its satellites are so dissimilar to its own. These are a few of the fascinating questions, and each mission provides us with a little bit more information.
