Christopher Nolan is once again breaking box office records following the 2023 blockbuster Oppenheimer. Sorry, fans of Nolan, but he doesn’t currently have a new film out. But since it appears that you all purchased tickets for the IMAX re-release of Interstellar—yes, that did happen—you were already aware of that. This past weekend, the film made a solid $4.4 million.
Fans of Interstellar, however, helped humanity find its greatest post-Thanksgiving box office ever, despite the fact that they may be somewhat stuck in time. Colonizing a planet is nearly as spectacular as that. Overall, this crop of films earned $132 million, shattering the previous record of $120 million set in 2018 (via Deadline). For the second consecutive weekend, Moana 2 and Wicked were the top earners, with $52 million and $34.9 million, respectively. After Saturday’s singing SNL stunt, why not include Gladiator II in the musicals as well? With an extra $12.5 million, the Paul Mescal-directed movie held onto its bronze medal place.
Films that have been on the list for weeks, including Venom: The Last Dance and The Wild Robot, were pushed out completely this weekend, causing a lot of shakeup in the overall rankings. The sequel in Telegu This weekend, for example, Pushpa: The Rule – Part 2 came in at number four, surpassing returning titles like Red One and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Then there’s Kyle Mooney’s dial-up disaster movie Y2K, which just finished at number eight on the box office but made less than half as much as Interstellar, which was released decade ago, with $2.1 million. Perhaps Y2K was actually a disaster—at least for A24.
