In another case of Marvel outdoing Marvel, Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has overtaken Avengers: Endgame to become the second-highest-grossing film in domestic box office history, reaching $858.4M.
On Monday, Brand New Day earned $3.4M during its fourth Monday in theaters.
Endgame‘s lifetime North American total stands at $858.3M. Disney is set to bring the Russo Brothers movie back to theaters on Sept. 25 as Avengers: Endgame: Encore. It remains uncertain how much the re-release will earn, but one thing is evident: Spider-Man: Brand New Day still has room to grow at the box office, with the film heading toward $900M domestically and potentially becoming only the second movie after Star Wars: Force Awakens to come close to the $1 billion domestic box office milestone. Brand New Day is currently just $41.6M short of reaching the nine-century mark at the B.O.
This weekend, Brand New Day is expected to remain No. 1 at the domestic box office, with an estimated $18M fifth-session haul. Ketchup Entertainment’s acquisition of Warner Bros’ shelved Coyote Vs. Acme is generating considerable buzz, with the movie tracking around $15M, although it is not yet known whether that represents a false positive. The film has earned $400K from sneaks so far, while advance ticket sales have been strong, but it remains uncertain whether the social-media rebellion is limited to NY and LA or will carry over across the rest of the country. Sony’s Insidious: Out of the Further is expected to decline by -60%, similar to its previous 2023 installment Red Door, for approximately $10M in its second frame.
Also arriving in theaters this weekend are 20th Century Studios’ Ridley Scott film Dog Stars and Roadside Attractions’ acquisition of the Sundance genre movie Buddy.
