As healthcare professionals, doctors have the blessing of being able to help others in their time of need. They are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of ailments, using their knowledge and expertise to improve the lives of their patients. One such doctor is Dr. Balvir S. Tomar, a renowned paediatric gastroenterologist who has dedicated his career to the betterment of mankind.
A world-renowned paediatric gastroenterologist, Dr. Tomar has spent his entire career working towards improving the lives of others. After completing his specialization in paediatric gastroenterology at Harvard University in the United States, later he completed his specialization in paediatric liver at Kings College in London on scholarship.
Upon returning to India, Dr. Tomar set up the first paediatric gastroenterology institute in the country at SMS Medical College in Jaipur, funded entirely by public donations. He dedicated himself to addressing diseases that commonly affected children, such as diarrhoea and malnutrition.
However, Dr. Tomar’s greatest achievement came when he encountered a disease with a 100% mortality rate that was claiming the lives of many children in India – Indian Childhood Cirrhosis. It is a rare, inherited liver disease that primarily affects young children. It is characterized by an accumulation of toxic levels of copper in the liver, which leads to liver damage and eventually cirrhosis.
The excessive use of utensils made of brass, which contains high levels of copper, was a common cause of ICC in India. Children would inadvertently ingest copper through milk or other food and the copper would accumulate in their livers. In some cases, inherited genetic disorders caused the intestines to absorb high levels of copper, leading to the development of ICC.
Determined to find a cure for this life-threatening disease, Dr. Tomar conducted extensive research and eventually discovered that D-Penicillamine, a treatment used for Wilson’s disease in other countries, could slow down the effects of toxic copper and segregate it from the liver in cases of Indian Childhood Cirrhosis. His groundbreaking research was published in the “Indian Journal of Paediatrics” and later quoted in “Advances in Pediatrics” in the United States.
In addition to his medical pursuits, Dr. Tomar is also a great leader and the founder and chairman of NIMS University, NIMS Super-specialty Hospital, and the Niflux Group of Companies & News India 24*7. He has a vision of making India a world leader in healthcare and education, with people from around the world coming to the country for treatment and education.
Prof. (Dr.) Balvir S. Tomar is a true example of the positive impact that doctors can have on society. He has dedicated his life to helping others and has now become a social entrepreneur, focusing on improving the lives of people through his campaigns. He has been passionate about making a positive impact on the world for decades and continues to work towards the betterment of humankind through his efforts as a social activist.
Through his dedication, knowledge, and expertise, he has made a significant contribution to the medical field and has saved countless lives. His ongoing efforts to improve healthcare and Education in India are a testament to his commitment to bettering the lives of others.
