A wind chill warning was still in effect on Monday morning, and more than 300 airline cancellations were recorded in Chicago.
Just under 200 flights had been cancelled at O’Hare International Airport and 161 more at Midway Airport as of 6:30 a.m.
The National Weather Service reports that a wind chill warning is in effect for numerous areas through Tuesday at noon, with wind chill values potentially dropping as low as 40 degrees below zero.
According to NWS authorities, a wind chill advisory will be in place for a number of counties through 9 a.m. on Wednesday after the wind chill warning expires. The next time wind chills are predicted to go above -10 degrees is Wednesday morning.
It is expected that winds will be a problem in the upcoming days.
Due to the conditions, a number of schools declared their closure through Tuesday.
Due to the extreme cold, some public schools have cancelled classes or switched to online learning, but most already have Monday off for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
