The 81st Golden Globe honors will take place on Sunday, January 7, 2024, and two new honors will be presented. The announcement was made by the Golden Globes organization on Tuesday, and among those celebrating are Chris Rock and Barbie.
The eight nominees for the best cinematic and box office achievement category, which is a new category, were chosen “from among the year’s highest-earning and/or most-viewed films that have gained extensive global audience support and produced exceptional creative content.” Films will be eligible, in more precise terms, “if they achieve a box office receipt total/gross of $150 million, of which $100 million must come from the U.S. domestic box office, and/or obtain commensurate digital streaming viewership recognized by trusted industry sources.” However, movies released after November 22 and through the end of the year “may qualify based on projected box office performance and/or digital streaming views from trusted industry sources.”
The nominees and winner will subsequently be decided by the Golden Globes voters “based on excellence.” (Recognition in any other category, such as best motion picture drama or musical/comedy, will not be affected by eligibility for this award.)
Best stand-up comedy performance on television, also known as best stand-up comedian on television, is another new category that will honor six nominees for “traditional stand-up comedy performances of at least 30 minutes, other than roles in television series, limited series, anthology series, or motion pictures made for television,” on “a recognized media platform” (individual social media accounts do not qualify). Only shows that were broadcast or made available for on-demand watching for the first time in the United States during the applicable calendar year are qualified.
The head of the Golden Globes organization, Helen Hoehne, said in a statement: “The Golden Globes has a rich history of supporting and celebrating the work of comedians, and we’re thrilled to honor their brilliance alongside outstanding motion picture and television performances of the year.” We are also honored to acknowledge the creativity and effort that go into producing a movie that is both commercially successful and aesthetically outstanding.
Tim Gray, the Golden Globes executive vice president, continued, “The new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award is more than merely honouring the year’s highest grossing and most popular motion pictures. These movies have not frequently received industry honors, but they ought to.
