In the 21st Century to run a successful business a strong grasp of data and risk is essential if you want to make your company successful.
However, the path to profit in the digital world can often appear difficult. And the skills needed beyond the grasp of even the most experienced business owner.
How do you evaluate the strategies and processes that enable your company to function optimally and achieve your goals?
This is where a Business Intelligence (BI) Specialist can step in to help you minimize downtimes and potential risks. With their help, you can maximise your returns and see margins increase.
A BI Specialist can assess technical applications and develop solutions using data and codes generated by system analysts, they design applications and servers.
Managing accounts and ensuring clients get what they want on time requires excellent critical thinking and technical skills, which many business owners do not have in their arsenal.
BI Specialists do the navigation of the intricate intersection of technology, data, and the art of selling for you.
Often it is not just about understanding the mechanics of BI and data analytics but also about crafting winning strategies that resonate with clients across diverse industries.
Camila Ignacia Peñailillo Bonacich has over 10 years of experience in the realm of Cloud, Analytics, BI and Cybersecurity.
Currently, working for Looker of LATAM, she drives exponential revenue growth and forms strategic partnerships with clients for the company: “When I first stepped into the realm of BI sales, I quickly realized that my role was more than just selling a product; it was about selling a vision. Customers want to go from a current state to their desired state and I love to show them in our first meeting how we can get there,” she says.
“Business Intelligence, at its core, is about empowering businesses with data-driven insights to make informed decisions.”
Considered an invaluable asset by her peers, she is seen as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring professionals in Business Intelligence.
In this article, Camila reveals the lessons and strategies she has learned that can harness the power of business intelligence sales.
Developing a Consultative Approach
One of the first strategies I adopted was developing a consultative approach. This meant moving beyond the traditional sales pitch and engaging with clients to understand their unique challenges and goals. As a BI specialist, I found that asking the right questions was key to uncovering the real needs of the business, which in turn allowed me to tailor BI solutions that addressed those specific needs.
Educating Clients: The Key to Trust
In my experience, one of the significant hurdles in BI sales is the lack of understanding among clients about the potential impact of BI solutions. Many view BI as a mere data reporting tool, not realizing its strategic value.
Therefore, a substantial part of my role involved educating clients, simplifying complex data concepts, and demonstrating the tangible benefits of BI – be it through improved operational efficiencies, enhanced customer experiences, or increased revenue opportunities by monetizing their data.
For example, most customers come with the idea of consolidating their data and having their information displayed in a console so they can make better decisions.
Sometimes what I get to tell them is various ideas of crossing data with internal-external sources so they can have a holistic view of their customers for example. Apply machine learning techniques to predict certain outcomes. In some cases to embed that data analytics to their own portal so their customers can have a seamless interaction with the service they are offering.
My customers are shown these ideas in a tailored way, specific to what they want to achieve, so they can have a clear vision.
Building Long-term Relationships
The essence of successful BI sales lies in building long-term relationships. It’s about trust and reliability.
Many clients feel lost at the start, unsure of how to bridge the gap between technology and business. My role often involves helping them construct a technology strategy that addresses their business questions effectively.
I also like to stay engaged with clients even after the sale is completed, ensuring that the BI solutions are effectively implemented and delivering the promised value. This approach not only builds lasting client relationships but also opens doors for future opportunities and referrals.
Adapting to Industry-Specific Needs
No two businesses are the same, and this is particularly true in the context of BI. Part of my success in BI sales has come from my ability to adapt solutions to specific industry needs. Whether working with a retail giant looking to optimize their supply chain or a healthcare provider aiming to improve patient care through data analytics, the key has always been to tailor the BI strategy to align with the industry-specific challenges and objectives.
Navigating Technological Changes
The BI landscape is continually evolving, with advancements in areas like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and predictive analytics reshaping the way businesses use data. Keeping abreast of these technological changes and understanding how they can enhance BI solutions has been crucial.
This continuous learning not only helped me stay ahead in the game but also enabled me to offer cutting-edge solutions to clients, thereby reinforcing my position as a trusted BI advisor.
Effective Storytelling in Sales
An important lesson I learned early in my career is the power of storytelling in sales. Instead of focusing on the technical specifications of BI tools, I concentrate on narrating stories of how these solutions can solve real business problems. By presenting case studies, success stories, and even potential future scenarios, I make BI more relatable and compelling to decision-makers.
The best tools I have are the demos; business-oriented demos with technical knowledge. This is really helpful because customers can see in a more tangible way how the process is a good fit.
Leveraging Data for Sales Success
As a BI specialist, I practice what I preach – leveraging data to drive my sales strategies. Analyzing sales data, customer feedback, and market trends has been instrumental in refining my sales approach, identifying new opportunities, and understanding the evolving needs of clients.
Collaborating with Cross-Functional Teams
BI is not a standalone function; it intersects with various aspects of a business. In my role, collaborating with cross-functional teams – from IT and finance to marketing and operations – has been vital. This collaboration not only ensures that the BI solutions are well-integrated across the business but also helps in identifying new areas where BI can add value.
The Road Ahead: Embracing Future Trends
Looking ahead, the BI field is set to become even more integral to business success. As I continue my journey, my focus is on embracing emerging trends like cloud-based BI solutions and advanced data visualization techniques. The aim is to stay ahead of the curve and continue delivering solutions that drive business growth and innovation.
The path to success in BI sales is a blend of technical expertise, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of client needs. It’s about being a trusted advisor, a problem solver, and a visionary. In my journey, the most rewarding aspect has been seeing businesses transform through the power of data and BI – a testament to the effectiveness of the strategies I have honed over the years.
