The Barbie press tour is finally coming to an end, just in time for the movie’s July 21 release in theaters. Margot Robbie and her crew also made stops in Sydney, Seoul, and pretty much everywhere else in between before landing in sunny Southern California, which is kind of where Barbie’s real Malibu dreamhouse is.
Robbie did something completely unexpected for this red carpet appearance, and it blew our minds: completely eschewing pink in favor of a glamorous black gown. But don’t worry; the 1960 Solo in the Spotlight doll-inspired black sequin Schiaparelli dress kept with her recent collection of Mattel-approved looks. The shimmering strapless dress had an A-line structure that hugged her body and ended at her shins, revealing her black Manolo Blahnik peep-toe slides through the voluminous tulle hem.
With a single red rosette perched along the frilly tutu, just like the original doll’s dress, Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal then demonstrated their incredulous attention to detail. Robbie wore opera gloves made of black velvet, a Lorraine Schwartz diamond choker with layers, and a blush handkerchief—all of which were nearly identical to the doll’s. Robbie’s light hair was styled in a high-pig tail updo with finger twists at the edge, and she impersonated Barbie’s glitz with a striking red lip and unobtrusive eye cosmetics.
Robbie’s past Barbie looks have included matching sets from Moschino, custom Atelier Versace manifestations, legacy Hervé Léger minis, and a huge number of Manolo Blahnik heels fit for a genuine doll. Mukamal, Robbie’s stylist, has been digging deep into the Barbie mythos to create the looks, which include everything from pantsuits inspired by the 1980s to throwbacks to the mid-century era.
