Previously, Sourav Ganguly had asserted that the BCCI has asked Virat Kohli to continue serving as Team India’s captain.
After Team India’s painful loss to Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval on Sunday, former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly made an eye-catching statement regarding Virat Kohli. Kohli and Ganguly, two of the best administrators to serve Indian cricket, were rumoured to be at odds throughout Ganguly’s bittersweet tenure as the head of the supreme cricket board.
After the India vs. Australia World T20 final, Ganguly spoke with Aaj Tak and reminisced his time as the head of the Indian cricket board. The former captain of India admitted that the BCCI had misgivings about Kohli stepping down as Test captain. “The BCCI was not ready for Virat Kohli to step down as Test captain. We weren’t expecting it either following the South Africa visit. The reason Virat Kohli resigned as captain is only known to him. Given that Virat Kohli is no longer the Test captain, there is no purpose in discussing this at this time. An India captain has to be chosen by the selectors. The greatest choice at the time was Rohit, according to Ganguly.
In the history of Test cricket, Kohli concluded his captaincy tenure as India’s most successful captain. India advanced to the championship game of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship in 2021 under the guidance of Kohli. As captain, Kohli led India to 40 victories. As India’s captain, he amassed 13 more Test victories than the late MS Dhoni. The 34-year-old captain ranks fourth among Test captains with the most victories, just behind Graeme Smith, Ricky Ponting, and Steve Waugh. As captain, the Indian run machine won 18 Test series. India lost six of the 25 Test series it played under Kohli’s leadership. Additionally, the former captain of India is the first Asian captain to triumph in a Test series in Australia.
