With the exception of China and the impressive start to Lunar New Year titles, the global box office had a really slow weekend. The majority of the remaining field is composed of holdovers from the conclusion of the previous year, except for one new studio entry and minor expansion. However, there are some new standards to take care of.
In other words, as its run draws to a close, Disney’s Moana 2 has eclipsed Finding Dory and Despicable Me 3 to become the ninth-highest-grossing animated film ever worldwide, with $1.037 billion ($1,036.8 million, to be exact).
Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King has now made $653 million worldwide, surpassing $650 million. It brought in an additional $11.7 million from the international box office in its seventh weekend, a tiny 29% decrease from the previous frame. $423.5M is the overseas cume. France ($39.5M), the UK ($36.6M), Germany ($29.3M), Mexico ($29.1M), and Italy ($23.4M) are the top five markets.
Continuing to make money (or maybe marmalade in this case), Studiocanal’s Paddington in Peru made an additional $8.7 million from 51 international markets, including 42 that were released by Sony, before its domestic release. With $93.2 million through Sunday, the offshore cume is now very close to $100 million. On Valentine’s Day, Paddington travels to North America.
Last weekend, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was approaching $450M, and it has now reached $462.5M globally. This comes after the little creature made an additional $7 million in 65 foreign markets this frame, resulting in a 38% decline and a $232 million offshore cume.
The top five thus far are Brazil ($12.9M), Australia ($18.2M), France ($19M), Mexico ($21.7M), and the United Kingdom ($30.1M).
With a $15 million global launch, New Line/Warner Bros.’ horror film Companion made its debut with $5.5 million in 60 foreign locations. With $919K, the UK was the largest market. The $10 million R-rated film, which was written and directed by Drew Hancock, is currently available in around 80% of the world’s markets, with seven more to follow, including Germany, Brazil, and Korea.
Additionally, Dog Man, the most popular dog in the country according to Universal/DreamWorks Animation, is being released in 29 additional markets this frame after opening in just one previous session. For a $4.6M international cume through Sunday, the weekend added $4.2M. Spain was clearly at the top of the pack with $1.1M. The UK and Brazil this month, as well as Australia, France, Germany, and Korea through April, are among the majors that have yet to open. After this session, the total worldwide is $40.6 million.
Notably, A Complete Unknown by Searchlight maintained its top rank in the UK for the third consecutive frame. This session, the Timothée Chalamet film debuted at the top of the French charts and has made $20.7 million abroad for a total of $87.4 million worldwide (details to follow).
