With the rise of cyber threats ranging from data breaches to sophisticated hacking attempts, protecting these valuable digital assets has become a high-stakes endeavor.
It means the strategic measures employed by restaurant executives and cybersecurity experts to fortify gift card systems have been forced to become more and more sophisticated.
“The first step in securing restaurant gift cards is understanding the risks. Cyber threats come in many forms, including phishing attacks, malware infections, and social engineering tactics,” says Sivakumar Vinayagam an expert in Cybersecurity and highly skilled Lead Systems Architect and Software Engineer.
“These threats can compromise sensitive data, such as gift card numbers and customer information, leading to financial losses and reputational damage for restaurants,” he adds.
Vinayagam has in-depth expertise in the arena of cybersecurity in the restaurant gift card space.
He is also unique in his background in electronics and communication engineering, and he has built a career in software engineering: “I specialize in writing software that integrates seamlessly with electronics. This unique combination of experience in both software and engineering allows me to understand and address issues effectively. My expertise in both fields enables me to provide comprehensive solutions and troubleshoot any problems that arise.”
As Lead Systems Architect at Netmasons Securetree since May 2019, Vinayagam has been pivotal in driving technological advancements and delivering high-quality software solutions.
His role encompasses hands-on coding, leading teams, managing projects, and ensuring that all deployments ensure high performance and reliability.
Vinayagam reveals: “At the forefront of restaurant gift card security is adopting cutting-edge technology solutions. From robust encryption protocols to advanced fraud detection algorithms, restaurants are now investing heavily in technology to protect their digital assets.”
These solutions leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze transactional data in real-time, identifying patterns and anomalies indicative of fraudulent activity: “Restaurants can now detect and mitigate cyber threats before they escalate into major security breaches,” he adds.
Implementing Multi-Layered Security Measures
In the high-stakes world of restaurant gift card security, one size does not fit all. Recognizing the need for a multi-layered approach, industry leaders are implementing a combination of security measures to fortify their defenses.
“Restaurants are now using encryption and tokenization to protect sensitive data and multi-factor authentication to verify users’ identities,” reveals Vinayagam.
“I have implemented several cybersecurity measures to protect our customers. For instance, each gift card has a unique 12-15 digit number. When you purchase a gift card, you can check its balance by entering this number on our website. However, scammers often use automated scripts to guess these numbers and access the card balances.”
He adds: “To counteract this, I have built security features into our system. If multiple attempts to access card balances are detected from the same computer, we can throttle the traffic, impose rate limits, and prevent further access. We monitor for unusual activity, and if a particular merchant or customer is targeted frequently, we ramp up our security validations.”
Restaurants also invest in secure network infrastructure and regular security audits to proactively identify and address vulnerabilities.
Fostering a Culture of Security Awareness
Effective security measures extend beyond technology and require a culture of security awareness among employees and customers.
Comprehensive training programs are one way to educate employees about the importance of cybersecurity and best practices for safeguarding digital assets. Additionally, restaurants are leveraging customer communication channels to raise awareness about security risks and provide guidance on protecting against cyber threats.
Vinayagam says: “One of the hardest parts of cybersecurity is educating employees and the owners on how to use these systems. In some cases even convincing them of the importance of having such systems and checks in place.
“There can also be a sense of overwhelm that they are too difficult to master. By fostering a culture of security awareness and understanding, restaurants can empower employees and customers to play an active role in protecting gift card assets from cyber threats,” he notes.
Compliance with Regulatory Standards
In addition to implementing robust security measures, restaurants must also comply with regulatory standards and industry regulations governing gift card security. This includes adherence to the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and other relevant regulations to protect sensitive data and customer information.
Vinayagam reveals: “Compliance with these standards not only mitigates legal risks but also demonstrates a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of security and integrity.”
Ali Shahrooz is the Co-Founder and Lead Architect at Netmasons Inc. He brought Vinayagam on board to work on our lead products and handle core development and design in software engineering.
He says the main reason they began working together was due to the fact that as a small FinTech business, they would often encounter support and technical debugging issues: “Shiva has consistently helped us identify and resolve these issues, while also providing solutions to prevent them in the future.
“As a business owner, I face numerous issues and responsibilities. Shiva handles critical problems and keeps business partners updated on communications.”
Shahrooz adds: “He quickly adapts to new situations and helps navigate challenges. One of our core advantages in this business is providing top-notch support and going above and beyond to help customers succeed with our tools.
“Shiva focuses on this aspect, enhancing our tooling and support to boost customer satisfaction and attract more business.”
Shahrooz says Vinayagam has been particularly successful in assisting with cyber security: “Our speciality in detecting fraudulent transactions and flagging them for review has made our tool widely used in the industry.
“Shiva has played a significant role in this achievement. Shiva also upgraded many of our outdated projects to the latest versions, adhering to industry standards for security and privacy.”
In an era of cyber threats, the commitment to gift card security is paramount for restaurants seeking to protect their valuable digital assets from exploitation.
“My role involves ensuring that our cybersecurity measures are robust and effective in protecting our customers from fraud,” concludes Vinayagam.
“By implementing these protections, we help prevent bad actors from exploiting gift card systems, safeguarding both the customers and the businesses involved.”
