With his most recent film, “Jawan,” Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is creating a stir at the international box office.
Shah Rukh Khan, widely regarded as the King of Bollywood, is maintaining his dominance as the year’s unquestioned box office victor. The 57-year-old actor made his acting debut in “Pathaan,” a spy thriller that borrowed ideas from blockbusters like “Fast and Furious” and “Mission: Impossible.” The Siddharth Anand-helmed action extravaganza became the second-highest-earning Hindi-language movie of all time, making over $17 million in the United States. The movie made a total of $130 million worldwide, making it by far Shah Rukh Khan’s highest-grossing movie.
Khan is just beginning to dominate the box office, though. On September 7, “Jawan,” the newest Indian product to dominate the world box office, was released. “Jawan,” which stars Khan as a vigilante attempting to rectify the wrongs of Indian society, is consistently breaking box office records. Over $10 million of the $15.6 million opening day revenue for the movie came from India. When it opened in January of last year, “Pathaan,” which previously held the record for the highest debut for a Hindi-language movie, made slightly under $13 million.
“Jawan,” which had a four-day weekend in India, made more than $29.5 million there. The movie earned $6.2 million in the United States during its first weekend of release, placing it at #4 this weekend’s top 5. Thanks to a $62.7 million global opening, “Jawan” is the second-highest grossing movie worldwide according to ComScore (via Variety). The revenge thriller trailed “The Nun II,” which brought in $85.3 million worldwide.
The buzz surrounding “Jawan” has only recently begun, so it’s too early to predict how much money Khan’s newest film will make.
Why is Jawan so well-known?
“Jawan” is currently the fourth-highest-grossing Indian movie of the year with a worldwide total just under $63 million. The movie is still causing havoc in India, where all of the screenings are sold out. According to analyst Sumit Kadel, the Atlee-directed movie scored a spectacular fourth day at the box office, earning over 71.63 cr. The movie has made significant progress internationally, demonstrating Shah Rukh Khan’s power outside of India. The movie is almost certain to become one of the highest-grossing Indian films of the year with such excellent box office numbers and favorable press coverage.
Can “Jawan” surpass “Pathaan,” the highest-grossing Indian movie of the year, in terms of box office take? Probably. Right now, “Jawan” is surpassing the milestones and trends set by “Pathaan” earlier this year. “Jawan” is making waves across the world, especially with the Indian diaspora, in part because of its timely political themes and messaging. And while “Pathaan” was well received, “Jawan” effectively elevates Khan to the status of a superhuman entity, making it a must-see for even his casual followers.
In addition, the picture marks the Bollywood debut of renowned director Atlee, a Tamil-language veteran with a devoted following of his own. “Jawan” stands out as a movie that was made with the intention of being seen by as many people as possible in India. When Khan’s morally dubious character is introduced in the movie, spectators cheer, as potential viewers can see on social media. Or perhaps they’ll be shocked to see theaters transformed into stadiums when Khan performs to the theme tune from the first movie. From the point of view of the box office, “Jawan” is more than just a movie; it’s a cultural movement, similar to this year’s “Barbenheimer,” where going to the movies became a required social activity.
Can Jawan’s box office success continue?
Although “Jawan” still has a ways to go before surpassing “Pathaan’s” domestic revenue of $17 million, it is undoubtedly conceivable provided momentum persists. Since September is largely empty the rest of the way, “Jawan” has an advantage with home audiences. Western audiences are far more likely to check out India’s action offerings now that “RRR,” which won an Oscar, has become a box office triumph. Before Megan Fox’s “The Expend4bles,” the only other action-focused film available to audiences is “The Equalizer 3,” which “Jawan” outgrossed globally this weekend.
The actual hysteria surrounding “Jawan” in India makes it all but certain that it will take the top spot at the box office. What matters is how far “Jawan” can advance. Without a doubt, the front-loading of the movie is due in part to the fandom that Khan and the filmmaker Atlee control. By the end of the month, the movie should easily surpass the 1050.3 crore ($130 million USD) barrier because it faces little to no competition.
The Rajnikanth epic “Jailer” and the Sunny Deol-starring “Gadar 2” are currently giving the movie some minor competition. It will be interesting to see if the two other blockbusters can compete in the next days, even if “Jawan” will gross $81 million USD and $76 million USD more than both movies combined.
The success of “Jawan” for Khan is yet another triumph following “Pathaan.” The actor will leave the industry with two of the highest-grossing movies of the year, and if “Jawan” can surpass the $150 million USD mark, which is looking more and more likely, then his most recent film would rank among the top three Indian movies of all time. Possibly three lightning strikes? Later this year, the actor will make his screen debut in “Dunki,” a social drama with a strong immigrant theme.
