Only teams placing in the top eight of the continental rankings for their respective sports would be permitted to travel for the Asiad, the ministry had previously stated. India is only placed 18th in Asia, making it impossible for them to get up to the top eight with the Games beginning in late September.
After that, even football coach Stimac pleaded for a special permission to let the football teams to take part in the competition. “I respectfully request that the Honourable Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and the Honourable Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi ji grant our football squad permission to compete in the Asian Games.
