On Wednesday, Microsoft revealed a new feature for Windows that would make it simple for users to share files between an iPhone and a PC. This feature is comparable to Apple’s AirDrop, which is exclusive to Apple devices.
File sharing between Windows PCs and iPhones is now possible.
Microsoft is now providing a beta version of Phone Link, which incorporates a new feature for file sharing between iPhones and PCs, to customers who have signed up for the Windows Insider program, as the company explained in a blog post. For those who don’t know, Phone Link is a Windows app developed by Microsoft that enables users to wirelessly connect their phone—iOS or Android—to their computer.
Users can view their notifications and even take calls from their PC after pairing. Additionally, file sharing between devices will soon be possible via Phone Link. When a user clicks to share a file on Windows, their phone will appear as an option. The Link to Windows app will show up as a sharing extension on iOS.
Microsoft states that in order to use the feature, an iPhone running iOS 16 or later and the Link to Windows app for iPhone version 1.24112.73 or higher are needed. Users must be enrolled in the Windows Insider beta program at this time, and the Phone Link app for Windows must be version 1.24112.89.0 or higher. The feature will eventually be made available to all users of Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Since sharing files between an iPhone and a non-Apple device can be challenging, this is fantastic news for iPhone users who also own a Windows computer.
