After six days of global release, Disney’s historic Moana 2 has already surpassed this year’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ($397.4M) and Bad Boys: Ride or Die ($404.5M), which is already the ninth-highest grossing film of the year, to reach $404.5M.
Moana 2 took the top spot at the domestic box office yesterday with $5.7 million, down 83% from Sunday’s total of $231.2 million. With $5.5M, down 72% from Sunday, Universal’s Wicked was not far behind, with a final total of $268.8M.
Moana 2 brought in $9.5 million on Monday, making it a $15.2 million global day. The foreign total is $173.3 million.
The 2016 original Moana ended at $643.3M worldwide, $248.7M domestically (which will likely be surpassed by this week’s sequel), and $394.5M internationally.
France ($19.2 million), the United Kingdom ($16.3 million), Mexico ($12.4 million), Germany ($10.6 million), Korea ($9.3 million), Italy ($9.3 million), Brazil ($8.8 million), Australia ($8.6 million), China ($6.7 million), Spain ($5.5 million), the Philippines ($5.2 million), and Indonesia ($3.9 million) are the key market breakdowns.
In the United States, family adults and children made up 67% of the audience for Moana 2, according to PostTrak. 42 percent chose to watch the film in 3D. 60% of the tickets for the Dwayne Johnson-Auli’i Cravalho film were purchased on the same day, demonstrating the amazing walk-up business. 53% of respondents identified as die-hard fans of the series, while 38% of respondents stated that they purchased tickets because they enjoy the Disney franchise.
Both the Frank Grillo horror film Werewolves from Briarcliff Entertainment and the Rachel Zegler horror film Y2K from Saturday Night Live’s Kevin Mooney are scheduled to premiere this coming weekend in the United States.
