Days Gone By
Gone are the days an actor can sit by the phone in hopes it rings.That will never happen. I have never had anyone call me without me doing the work beforehand. This is an industry you have to be pro-active in and if you are not, the next person to you is.
There is so much, as an actor, we can do without relying on our manager or agent. First we need to find the right representation which is in your own hands to do. I know sometimes you don’t know where to start especially when you are new in a city but there is always a platform to start off with, like Backstage, Casting Networks, and Casting Frontier. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. This industry is full with people who have the biggest pleasure to help. I don’t know any other industry where there are so many kind and open people.
No Role Is Too Small
Just because you aren’t booking a lead role, doesn‘t mean you want be noticed and hired for the next big thing. Even working as a background actor has amazing merits. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet people in the industry, and for working backgrouond on a movie or TV set, you really don’t need specific acting experience so if you are startinig out, give it a try. I definitely suggest it, first of all if you are just starting out, you will learn what goes on behind the scenes. How much work goes in, and how many people are involved in creating a film or a TV series. With all my experieicen working on set, I am still in awe how many jobs there are that need to be done. You also realize what is your own responsibility on set and if you are cut out to be the lead. There are so many people behind you rooting for you, but also expect that you fulfill your duties and actually that you lead. I always keep in my mind the interview with Viola Davis speaking about Meryl Streep, and how Streep conducts herself on set. And that’s why I enjoy between filming to role my sleevs up and work background. It grounds me. No role is too small if you are growing.
The Power of Learning From Your Peers
I love to dig into researching online. There are so so so many videos on YouTube that I have watched and have helped me grow. From interviews with actors, where I am learning from them to actors describing their daily life in Los Angeles and how they approach an audition. My biggest tip is to watch YouTube, you can find so much knowledge by watching and absorbing the information others have sucecssfully tackled before.
Create To Dominate
It is very important for an actor to create their own opportunities. You have to create to dominate. There will always be someone more pro-active than you. Be the person who people aspire to be and say damn she works hard. If you want to succeed in the entertainment industry you have to have a strong spirit. Reach out to people, talk with people and specifically find your people. Create an artistic community around you with people you want to work with. We are all in the same boat and so many times people have similar ideas and want to do something, they just need you to lead the project.
