Netflix is intensifying its focus on mobile experiences and gaming, as highlighted during the company’s recent APAC Product Innovation Showcase.
At the event, Netflix detailed its strategy to extend its revamped mobile experience into more markets throughout Asia-Pacific, while simultaneously advancing its gaming initiatives through the ongoing expansion of Netflix Playground, a dedicated destination for children’s games.
The streaming giant is also continuing to increase the availability of its redesigned mobile application. Following the introduction of the updated experience in Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, India, and Malaysia earlier this year, Netflix intends to bring the new version to South Korea and Japan in July, with more Asia-Pacific regions scheduled to receive it afterward.
One of the central elements of the redesign is “Clips,” Netflix’s response to the rising demand for short-form video content. The vertical video feed enables users to discover bite-sized content from Netflix’s catalog, delivering quick entertainment during times when viewers may not be able to watch a full episode or film.
Netflix is now planning to further develop the feature. The company disclosed plans to test themed Clip collections that would group short-form videos around particular moods, genres, and interests. These curated collections may include everything from standout reality TV scenes to behind-the-scenes content and podcast excerpts.
In addition to streaming, Netflix remains committed to expanding its gaming portfolio. The company announced that it is broadening Netflix Playground, its gaming hub created specifically for children. The newest addition will center on “KPop Demon Hunters,” the popular animated musical that has rapidly emerged as one of Netflix’s leading family-focused titles.
The new experience will debut with six mini-games, giving fans the opportunity to engage directly with characters and storylines from the movie. The timing comes as little surprise, as “KPop Demon Hunters” attracted more than 518 million views during its first six months, making it one of Netflix’s most successful animated releases. Netflix appears to be leveraging that popularity while providing families with additional reasons to remain engaged within its ecosystem.
Netflix Playground was initially introduced in April across markets such as the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., underscoring the company’s plans to expand the concept on a global scale.
