headed by a womanIn the most recent test of superhero fatigue at the movie office, The Marvels is expected to open between $75 million and $80 million. On Nov. 10, it debuts.
The 2019 film Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson, debuted to $153.4 million in North America at box office, not accounting for inflation. The 33rd entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a follow-up to that film. According to the research firm, tracking for The Marvels varies significantly; NRG estimates it at $72 million to $88 million, while The Quorum estimates it at $80 million to $90 million.
The superhero movie is distinct since it features three leads who are female. It was also directed by Nia DaCosta, who is the youngest director of a Marvel Cinematic Universe film and the first Black woman to helm a Marvel Studios production.
Ant-Man ($57.2 million) from 2015 was the last Marvel Studios film to not debut at a minimum of $70 million. Eight MCU films have opened at $150 million or more, while the rest of the films—25—have opened at $100 million or more domestically.
Exhibitors are under additional pressure to perform well after Dune: Part II postponed its November 2 release date due to the ongoing actors’ strike and the ensuing ban on talent participating in any kind of promotion. Though they had anticipated the strike would finish in time for the cast to do press, Marvel Studios and Disney chose to retain The Marvels on its scheduled release date.
Superhero tiredness is another persistent worry. DC has suffered the most, as evidenced by this summer’s Flash bombing, which occurred after the film’s domestic premiere to $55 million. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was a notable exception to any weariness. The threequel opened with a $106 million domestic opening and went on to gross $845.6 million worldwide, second only to the second film ($863.7 million).
In addition to Teyonah Parris, who plays the mature Monica Rambeau from Captain Marvel, and Iman Vellani, the breakout heroine of the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel, are joining Larson in the new film. WandaVision, which featured screenwriter Megan McDonnell from The Marvels among its authors, was the actor’s Marvel debut.
As hinted at in the Ms. Marvel season finale from the previous year, the heroes in The Marvels are connected in a most inconvenient way: whenever one of them uses their powers, they swap locations with each other.
The Marvels stars Saagar Shaikh, Mohan Kapur, Zenobia Shroff, Gary Lewis, and Park Seo-joon.
