Google Drive’s mobile document scanner will now have automatic “Enhance” features, as announced accompanying December’s Pixel Feature Drop.
Last year, Google Drive revamped its document scanner, adding a visible tiny FAB shortcut. There’s a new camera with Auto capture mode and an improved editor. Crop and rotate, use filters, and clean (to remove stains, fingers, and other marks). Since then, Google has provided JPEG saving and a black and white filter.
The most recent tool is Enhance, which appears on the Preview screen once an image is captured. Tap the sparkle icon in the corner to “perform actions like white balance correction, shadow removal, contrast enrichment, auto sharpening, light improvement, and more.”
“No manual editing needed” is the goal, and Enhance works on receipts, documents, ID cards, and other items. The example below shows a before and after comparison, with the upgraded version being completely flat.
Google announced on Friday that the document scanner in Drive is already available, with full availability expected in the coming weeks for all “Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual Subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts.”
