India defeated England by seven wickets to win the ICC women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup on Sunday at Potchefstroom, South Africa.
The Shafali Verma-led team scored the required runs for victory while losing just three wickets while needing to chase down a meagre 69.
Early losses for India were Verma (15) and Shweta Sehrawat (5), but later innings stabilisation by Gongadi Trisha (24) and Soumya Tiwari (24 not out) allowed the team to complete its innings in 14 overs.
With only 20 runs on the board in the fourth over after giving Baker a straightforward catch off Grace Scrivens, Shweta Sehrawat, her opening partner and the team’s best batter in the event, was also back in the hut.
Prior to England being dismissed for 68 in 17.1 overs, pace sensation Titas Sadhu demonstrated that India’s women’s pace bowling is in good hands following the departure of Jhulan Goswami with impressive figures of 4-0-6-2. Leg-spinner Parshavi Chopra also put on a strong performance, taking 2 for 13, as England were dismissed for 68.
At any level, the Indian women’s cricket team has never won a World Cup. The senior team failed to get past the semifinals in three different World Cups.
