Now that LineageOS 22 is official, the most recent builds, which are based on Android 15, will be released in the coming days and include a variety of new features and improvements.
The most recent upgrade for the ROM project, LineageOS 22, was revealed in a thorough and dedicated blog post. It is not the first, though, to officially support the latest Android version. Evolution X, another ROM we’ve test-driven here, deserves that distinction.
LineageOS 22 is far ahead of schedule when compared to the Android 14 release. It will be released in the coming weeks, allowing users of LineageOS 21 builds to update to Google’s most recent mobile operating system before 2024 is over. This is built on Android 15 QPR1, as you might anticipate, and it has all security updates through December 2024. Lineage is arriving as 22.1 instead of 22.0 because this is built on QPR1.
Updates will use the x.1 update naming scheme since this all fits into Google’s “minor SDK releases” shift. As part of the suggested Android 16 25Q4 release cycle, the team also mentions LineageOS 23.2.
This fits very nicely with Google’s recently proposed idea of minor SDK releases going future. You will now be able to tell which Android version you are installing. It should be compatible with LineageOS 23.2 if the 25Q4 release is Android 16 QPR2, and so on.
The new music application “Twelve,” which replaces the outdated “Eleven” system music player, is one of the most notable new headline additions to LineageOS 22. Material You design, a dedicated landscape mode for tablets and larger displays like foldables, support for many music library server protocols including Subsonic and Jellyfin, and numerous other improvements to enhance your listening experience are all features of the new paint job.
Not only that, but because of the restrictions of the Jelly browser, LineageOS 22 now comes with a built-in PDF reader. If you don’t want to install a specific app for a single, little function, like viewing downloaded documents, this might be helpful.
A new download page has also been introduced with LineageOS 22. For the first time, there is a special dark theme on the Lineage download portal. You may download more device pictures and check downloaded files, including ones that weren’t from the official repo.
More than 100 devices—including the full Pixel 9 series for the first time—are listed as LineageOS 22 compatible, and another 50 now support the build from last year, LineageOS 21. It’s a pleasant year-end addition and a significant update. Although there aren’t any downloads accessible as of this announcement post, that should change in the upcoming weeks.
